In a world of mass production and computer-controlled machines I am a survivor of the previous generation of traditionally-trained designer/craftsmen. Most of my professional career was spent in training teachers to pass on these skills until I had the opportunity to retire very early and pursue my own interests. As a widower left with three student sons I made the change to spend more time on family affairs.
The boys are all grown men now and involved with careers which allow no time for sundial making so I have made many efforts to pass on details and practices of my craft and of its highly specialist processes to those who are genuinely interested in dial making. At least one dial maker that I have never met is now making high quality dials having acquired the initial skills largely by email.
My infatuation with sundials is comparatively recent, beginning some twenty years ago when a friend asked me to make one that he had designed and the infection has taken an increasing hold ever since. It is only for the last ten years however that this has been formalized into a small business to design and make unique sundials to individual order. The luxury of being able to pick and choose my projects is only possible because I do not have to make my living by doing it; a good fortune earned by many years at 'the chalk face'!
