Comments: I am the chap who Mike told you about. I was introduced to Mike recently and found his collection and enthusiasm just inspirational. I was in China recently and Mike may have told you about my interesting experiences out there. You MUST go and see for yourself. But first do some reading. Ancient China measured Latitude from the elivated pole ... compasses pointed South, the circle was divided into 365.25 parts, the compass was divided into 48 points. They had a leap year long before we did and used pi (circ/radius) before us. I hope you enjoyed the pictures. If you plan to go, do phone me on 0151-653-4061. My interest is making reproductions of old navigation instruments. Very slow progress because I am still at work. Your mariner's astrolabe puts mine to shame. But your workshop makes me green with envy. I am a beginner at machine tools. The milling photograph captivated my interest. I must talk some more on how to do this. Most impressed with all that your website contains and all that Mike has told me. I hope that we can meet some time. I have moved to a new computer and I lost your email address in the transfer, so I'm writing from your guestbook again. My web site will be on line in a week or so, and I would like to refer people who want serious sundials to your web site. We talked about this before and you encouraged me to go ahead, and offered to link to me also. I hope that is still all right. I am calling you a "sundialist extraordinaire" and inviting people to go to you for the best sundials. Let me know if you want me to include a photo of one of your dials, and if so, which one. I'm as busy as a one armed wallpaper hanger with fleas right now trying to meet a self imposed, but totally arbitrary, deadline; meanwhile going deeper and deeper into debt. I'm following the example of our fearless president: I'm fighting a futile war on sundial ignorance and creating a huge financial deficit. Unfortunately I will have to pay my deficit back personally--whether pople buy sundial alarms or not. By the way, I notice that your dial for the Rotarians in Colchester incorporates their gear logo. It seems to me a pity that it cannot have each hour correspond exactly to a tooth. It could do that if it were an equatorial design, though maybe the client prefers a horizontal. Alternatively, if I remember correctly, the bifilar design described by (invented by?) Fred Sawyer is a horizontal with a circular dial of equally spaced hours. Just a thought.
