This Sundial was made to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first English settlement at Jamestown on 14th May, 1607 and was inaugurated on September 14th 2007 .

"Inspiration for the main feature of the sundial was drawn from the
'navette' (little boat) shaped seal of the Virginia Company in London.
The seal faces were entirely re-drawn in software from the original
hand-engraving to make them suitable for deep etching.

The Latin inscription translates as

SIGLUM REGIS MAGNAE BRITANIAE FRANCIAE ET HIBERNIAE
"Seal of the King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

PRO CONSILIO SUO VIRGINIAE
"For his council in Virginia."

The event was attended by about 150 people including several local dignitaries and kids from the local school.

The adults were seated under a large awning for the occasion and the children on a large artifical 'lawn'.

Several speeches were made as in the
attached programme before the sundial was unveiled from its cover of the Stars and Stripes united with the Union Flag, a unique event in itself perhaps.

Dial Unveiled

This is the first sundial in what is hoped to be an International Sundial Park some 12 miles from the centre of Washington DC and established by the local Analemma Society. This dial, however, is special enough to deserve its own railed enclosure and a lockable steel 'safe' to protect it from thieves and graffiti artists at night.
